The other day, I had a really interesting conversation with a old friend. He is working on getting funding for a start-up. The conversation focused on the product… well at least the technology, the sales tactics and key early adopters. When I asked him about marketing he quickly said that that would be figured out after the funding.

That got me thinking about how incredibly backwards most business leaders think.  Marketing is a nice “could have” not a “must have”. We started talking about how important marketing is, how you need to consider marketing the product before it is final. How you need to have real numbers to show investors…. and that marketing is part of the product you are selling to potential investors.

There is so much to talk about here.  Love to have your ideas.  What do you think about Marketing as a key player early in company’s strategy?

Next discussion – when companies fail because they undervalue the role of marketing..
